What city planning authorization to deposit to settle a pergola, carport or wood shelter?
Verified 11 April 2025 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
To settle a pergola, carport or woodshed, you must file a preliminary declaration of works (DP) or an application for a building permit (PC) in town hall. The authorization to be deposited depends on the MORE: titleContent of your municipality which can define your project as a new construction or an extension. It also depends on the location of the land (urban area of a PLU, protected area) and the surface of your construction. We're presenting the regulations.
In any case, you should consult the PLU of your municipality which may provide rules on building materials and the installation of a pergola, carport or wood shelter compared to neighboring properties. To find out about these rules, you must contact the city planning department of your city hall.
If the PLU does not provide for any special rules, you must settle your pergola, carport or wooden shelter either at the boundary of your property or at least 3 meters from it.
The PLU of your municipality can consider your pergola, carport or wood shelter either as a new construction or as an extension. Before filing an authorization application, you must inquire with the city planning department of your town hall.
New construction
You must check if your construction is in a protected area. You can get that information from your city hall.
